Gas Safety Week: five checks for a safer home
Gas Safety Week ran from 14–20 September 2026, bringing attention to the simple checks that help keep homes safe. As the heating season approaches, it’s a good time to check your boiler and other gas appliances before you rely on them every day.
At Dales Boiler Services, we work in homes across Brighton & Hove. Here are five things worth checking:
- When was your boiler last serviced?
Arrange an annual service and safety check with a Gas Safe registered engineer. A boiler can appear to be working normally while still needing attention.
- Is your engineer qualified for the job?
Check their Gas Safe ID card. It shows which types of gas work they’re qualified to carry out. You can also check an engineer on the Gas Safe Register website.
- Is your carbon monoxide alarm working?
Carbon monoxide has no smell, taste or colour. Test your alarm regularly, and never treat it as a replacement for having gas appliances checked.
- Have you noticed any warning signs?
Sooty marks around an appliance, unusual condensation or a flame that looks different from normal can indicate a problem. Turn the appliance off and arrange for a qualified engineer to inspect it.
- If you rent out a property, is its gas safety check up to date?
Landlords must arrange an annual gas safety check for the gas appliances they provide and give tenants a copy of the Gas Safety Record.
Smell gas? Leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, get into fresh air and seek medical help.
