Why replace your boiler

Why replace your boiler?

A new A-rated condensing boiler does far more than heat your home — it reduces bills, improves comfort and gives you years of reliable service.

Lower energy bills

A modern A-rated condensing boiler runs at 92–94% efficiency. Replacing a pre-2005 unit typically saves the average UK home around £340 a year on gas.

Greater reliability

New boilers use modern electronics, self-diagnostics and higher-grade components — dramatically reducing the risk of mid-winter breakdowns.

Improved heating performance

Rooms warm up faster, temperatures stay steady, and every radiator delivers its full output. Winter mornings finally feel like they should.

Better hot water

Modern combis deliver higher flow rates for stronger showers, and system boilers with unvented cylinders provide mains-pressure hot water throughout the house.

Quieter operation

Newer boilers run noticeably quieter thanks to improved fans, modulating burners and better acoustic insulation — no more kettling or banging pipes.

Modern smart controls

Wi-Fi thermostats, weather compensation and OpenTherm modulation come as standard, giving you fine control from your phone and typical 8–12% savings.

Lower carbon emissions

A more efficient boiler burns less gas for the same warmth — shrinking your household carbon footprint and helping the UK meet its net-zero targets.

Longer warranties

Manufacturer-approved installations from Vaillant Advance and Worcester Accredited engineers unlock warranties of up to 12 years — real peace of mind.

Which boiler is right?

Which boiler is right for your home?

Choosing the right type of boiler makes all the difference to comfort, efficiency and running costs. Here's a plain-English guide to the three main options — we'll always confirm the right choice for you during the survey.

Combi boilers
The UK's most popular choice
How it works: A combination boiler heats water on demand directly from the mains — no separate tank or cylinder. Turn on a tap and the boiler fires up instantly.
Best suited to: Ideal for 1–3 bedroom homes with a single bathroom and good mains water pressure.
Advantages
  • Space-saving — no cylinder or loft tank
  • Instant hot water on demand
  • Efficient — no stored water losing heat
  • Faster, less disruptive installation
Considerations
  • Flow rate limited by mains pressure
  • Not ideal for simultaneous multiple showers
  • Higher-output units need larger gas pipe
Best for: flats, terraces & semi-detached (1–3 beds, 1 bathroom)
System boilers
Best for larger family homes
How it works: A system boiler works with a separate hot water cylinder, usually an unvented one running at mains pressure. All controls and the expansion vessel are built into the boiler itself.
Best suited to: Ideal for 3–5 bedroom homes with multiple bathrooms and higher hot water demand.
Advantages
  • Excellent flow to multiple outlets simultaneously
  • Mains-pressure hot water — strong showers throughout
  • Compatible with solar thermal and heat pumps
  • Faster hot water refill than heat-only systems
Considerations
  • Requires airing cupboard or utility space for the cylinder
  • Hot water is finite — waits between long uses
  • Slightly more complex than a combi installation
Best for: detached homes & larger properties (3–5 beds, 2+ bathrooms)
Heat only (regular) boilers
Traditional systems, modernised
How it works: A heat-only (or 'regular') boiler feeds a hot water cylinder and, traditionally, a cold water tank and feed-and-expansion tank in the loft. Modern versions can run on sealed systems too.
Best suited to: Ideal for period properties, homes with existing traditional systems, or areas with poor mains water pressure.
Advantages
  • Works well with older pipework and low mains pressure
  • Simple, robust and easy to service
  • Can supply multiple bathrooms with sufficient tank capacity
  • Straightforward like-for-like replacement
Considerations
  • Requires loft tanks and airing cupboard cylinder
  • Slower to warm up than combi or system boilers
  • Larger overall footprint in the home
Best for: older/period homes on existing gravity-fed systems

"We got three quotes for a new combi. Dales weren't the cheapest, but they were the only ones who properly surveyed the house and explained exactly what we needed. Two years on, boiler is still faultless."
Priya S. Hove
"Complete system conversion from a regular boiler to a combi. Done in two days, immaculate work, honest fixed pricing and a straightforward 10-year Worcester warranty. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend."

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How much does a new boiler cost?

The price varies depending on the type of boiler, brand, warranty length and any additional work needed — but a typical combi replacement in Brighton or Hove starts from around £1,895 fully fitted. System and heat-only installations, boiler-type conversions and premium models such as Vaillant Advance or Worcester Accredited cost more. We always confirm a fixed, itemised price in writing before any work begins — no vague estimates, no hidden extras.

Which boiler is best for my home?

It depends on your property size, hot water demand and existing pipework. Combi boilers suit most 1–3 bedroom homes with one bathroom, system boilers work best for larger homes with multiple bathrooms and hot water demand, and heat-only boilers are ideal for period properties on gravity-fed systems. During your survey we'll assess your home honestly and recommend the correct type — not simply the most expensive.

How long does installation take?

A straightforward combi swap is usually completed in a single day. A boiler-type conversion (for example, upgrading a heat-only system to a combi) typically takes 1–2 days. Larger unvented system installations may take 2–3 days. We give you a realistic timeframe upfront so you can plan around it.

Can I keep my existing pipework?

In most cases, yes — provided the pipework is in good condition and correctly sized for the new boiler. During the survey we inspect the gas supply, mains water pressure and existing radiator pipework carefully. If anything needs upgrading (for example, a larger gas pipe for a higher-output boiler), we explain why and include it in your fixed quote.

How efficient are modern boilers?

Every new gas boiler sold in the UK is a high-efficiency A-rated condensing boiler, running at 92–94% efficiency. That means almost every unit of gas is turned into useful heat — compared with 60–70% for a typical pre-2005 boiler. Replacing an old G-rated boiler saves the average UK home around £340 per year on gas bills (Energy Saving Trust).

Will I need a powerflush?

Not always. If your existing system is relatively clean and well-maintained, a magnetic filter and chemical flush is often sufficient. However, most boiler manufacturers require a system that's clean, flushed and inhibited to keep the warranty valid — so on older or sludged systems, a powerflush is highly recommended. We'll test water quality during the survey and give you honest advice.

What warranty will I receive?

That depends on the boiler you choose. Standard warranties usually run 5–7 years, but as a Vaillant Advance and Worcester Accredited installer we can offer manufacturer-backed warranties of up to 12 years on selected models. We register every warranty on your behalf and send you the paperwork for your records.

Do I need a magnetic filter?

Yes — and every one of our installations includes one as standard. A magnetic system filter (such as MagnaClean) captures iron-oxide sludge before it reaches your new boiler's heat exchanger, protecting the boiler for years and keeping efficiency high. It's a small component that dramatically extends system life and is required by most manufacturers to validate the warranty.
