Why You Should Always Use a Gas Safe Registered Engineer
When you need work carried out on your boiler, gas fire, cooker or any other gas appliance, there is one check you should always make before allowing someone to start work:
Are they Gas Safe registered?
The Gas Safe Register is the official register of businesses legally permitted to carry out gas work in the UK.

What Is the Gas Safe Register?
The Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the official gas registration body in Great Britain in 2009.
Under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, anyone carrying out gas work as part of a business must be appropriately qualified and registered. (HSE)
Being a plumber does not automatically mean somebody is qualified to work on gas.
An engineer must have the correct gas qualifications for the particular type of work they are carrying out.
Why Does Gas Safe Registration Matter?
Gas appliances are extremely safe when they are installed, maintained and serviced correctly.
Poor or illegal gas work, however, can potentially result in:

Don’t Just Ask – Check the Gas Safe Card
Every registered gas engineer should carry a Gas Safe ID card.
If you’re unsure, ask to see it.
The front of the card identifies the engineer, while the back shows the categories of gas work that engineer is qualified to undertake.
This is important because being Gas Safe registered doesn’t necessarily mean an engineer is qualified to work on every type of gas appliance.
You can also check an engineer or business directly on the Gas Safe Register website.
Beware of Fake Gas Safe Claims
Unfortunately, displaying a Gas Safe logo on a van, website, Facebook page or advert doesn’t prove that somebody is currently registered.
In July 2026, the HSE reported the prosecution of an illegal gas fitter who had advertised on Facebook and used flyers displaying the Gas Safe logo despite not being registered. Some of the gas work he carried out was found to be dangerous. (HSE Media Centre)
It only takes a couple of minutes to check someone’s registration before allowing them to work in your home.
What Gas Work Should Be Left to a Gas Safe Engineer?
If work involves the gas supply or gas components of an appliance, don’t attempt it yourself or employ an unregistered tradesperson.
