The efficiency case

Small dial, huge impact.

Your boiler can only be as efficient as the brain telling it what to do. Modern controls turn a good boiler into a great one.

Types of control

The six pieces of an efficient system.

Programmer / Timeswitch

Tells the boiler when to run heating and hot water. The baseline for any efficient system.

Room Thermostat

Holds your living space at the target temperature. Prevents the boiler cycling once the home is warm.

Smart Thermostat

Learns, schedules and geofences. Talks to your boiler over OpenTherm or eBUS for real efficiency gains.

TRVs & Smart TRVs

Set each radiator to its own temperature. Zone the whole home without a wet-system rebuild.

Weather Compensation

Outdoor sensor tells the boiler to run cooler when it's mild — huge condensing efficiency win.

Boiler Interlock

Wired correctly, the boiler only fires when heat is actually called for. Required by Building Regs.

Why it matters

A £900 boiler with a £30 dial is a £900 boiler running like a £300 one.

Modern condensing boilers only hit their advertised A-rated efficiency when the return water temperature stays low enough to condense. A basic on/off thermostat lets the boiler thrash between full fire and off — meaning it barely condenses at all. Fit an OpenTherm or eBUS control and the boiler modulates down, condensing far more of the time and burning noticeably less gas for the same warm house.

Add weather compensation, smart TRVs and a proper boiler interlock and you're looking at real-world savings of up to 40% on your heating bill — plus a home that feels more evenly warm, room by room.

We'll spec the right combination for your property, wire it in cleanly, pair it to your Wi-Fi and app, and show you how to use it — including a written schedule you can tweak later.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do smart boiler controls really save money?

Yes — Energy Saving Trust research shows that a full set of modern heating controls (programmer, room thermostat, TRVs and boiler interlock) can cut heating bills by up to 40% compared with no controls at all. Smart thermostats add learning and geofencing on top, typically saving a further 8–15%.

Which smart thermostat works with my boiler?

Almost every modern combi, system or regular boiler in the UK will work with Nest, Hive, Tado, Honeywell evohome, Drayton Wiser, Google Nest and Ecobee. Manufacturer-matched controls — Vaillant sensoHOME/sensoCOMFORT, Worcester Bosch EasyControl, Ideal Halo, Baxi uSense, Viessmann ViCare — unlock features like weather compensation and boiler modulation for maximum efficiency.

What is OpenTherm and why does it matter?

OpenTherm is a two-way communication standard between the thermostat and the boiler. Instead of just switching the boiler on and off, an OpenTherm control tells the boiler exactly how much heat is needed — so it modulates down, condenses more of the time and burns less gas. It's one of the biggest efficiency wins available on a modern condensing boiler.

Do I still need TRVs if I have a smart thermostat?

Yes. A smart thermostat controls the whole home from one room. TRVs (or smart TRVs like Tado, Drayton Wiser, Honeywell evohome) let you set different temperatures in each room — so bedrooms stay cool, bathrooms stay warm, and unused rooms don't waste gas.

Can you install smart controls when you fit my new boiler?

Absolutely — we install Nest, Hive, Tado, Honeywell, Drayton, Vaillant, Worcester, Ideal, Baxi and Viessmann controls as part of a boiler install or as a standalone upgrade. Wiring, pairing and app setup are all included.

Are smart controls hard to use for older customers?

Not at all. Every system we install has manual dial or button controls on the wall as well as the app. We set the schedule up for you, show you how to change the temperature, and leave written instructions.
