Central Heating Chemical Protection – Why It Matters

When you have a new boiler installed or your central heating system serviced, one of the most important things to consider is something you can’t actually see — the water circulating inside your heating system.

Over time, untreated central heating water can cause corrosion, sludge and scale to build up inside radiators, pipework and the boiler itself. This can reduce efficiency and eventually lead to expensive breakdowns.

What causes sludge in a central heating system?

Your heating system contains different metals, including steel, copper, brass and aluminium. When these metals are continually exposed to water and oxygen, corrosion can occur.

One of the results is magnetite, the black sludge commonly found inside older heating systems.

You may notice symptoms such as:

  • Radiators cold at the bottom
  • Radiators taking a long time to heat up
  • Some rooms heating better than others
  • Noisy boiler or heating system
  • Regular boiler faults
  • Dirty or black heating water
  • Reduced heating efficiency

Left untreated, this contamination can circulate through the boiler and affect components such as pumps, valves and heat exchangers.

What is central heating inhibitor?

Central heating inhibitor is a specialist chemical added to the system water to help protect the internal metals against corrosion and scale.

Think of it as long-term protection for the inside of your heating system.

A correctly cleaned and treated heating system should have the appropriate concentration of inhibitor added when it is filled.

However, inhibitor isn’t necessarily there forever. If the system is drained down, radiators are removed or significant amounts of fresh water are repeatedly introduced, the chemical concentration can become diluted.

That’s why the condition of the system water should be considered during routine boiler servicing.

Cleaning an existing heating system

Adding inhibitor to a heavily contaminated system isn’t the same as cleaning it.

If an older heating system already contains significant sludge or debris, it may first require a chemical clean or, in more serious cases, a powerflush.

Cleaning helps remove existing contamination. Inhibitor is then added afterwards to help prevent corrosion from developing again.

The correct treatment depends on the condition and design of the individual heating system.

Magnetic filters

A magnetic heating-system filter can provide another layer of protection.

These filters are installed on the heating circuit and are designed to capture magnetic debris before it circulates through the boiler.

They can be particularly useful on older heating systems and when a new boiler is being connected to existing radiators and pipework.

The filter should also be checked and cleaned as part of ongoing system maintenance.

Protecting a new boiler

Installing a new boiler onto a dirty heating system can potentially shorten the life of the new appliance.

Modern boilers have compact heat exchangers and waterways, which makes good water quality increasingly important.

When replacing a boiler, the existing system should therefore be assessed, cleaned where necessary and correctly treated with inhibitor.

It’s a relatively small part of a boiler installation, but it can make a significant difference to the long-term reliability of the heating system.

Prevention is cheaper than repair

Central heating chemical protection isn’t particularly exciting — but neither is paying for a blocked heat exchanger, failed pump or inefficient heating system.
